ANONYMOUS Altærs
A concept that was acutalized in the dreamscape atmosphere of rural Finland. Finding the sacred and consecrating space through a symbolic gesture: the altar. This project will continue to grow as I seek out the sacred ad infinitum.
Altær (n): honoring the land by altering it through the creation of an offering in the form of an altar.
altær to Metsä
2023 | 36” x 36” x 36"| found stones
This altær was created for Metsa (word for forest in Finnish). I
wanted to create an object that served as a tool for communing
with the forest and thanking Metsa, inviting my cohort to
participate by placing offerings, throughout our stay at Arteles.
altær to Arteles
2023 | varies | birch bark & wheat paste
These groups of altærs were created after experimenting with different
methods of scale and form-making. When I held the bark against the
sunlight it created a warm atmospheric glow which I tried to replicate by
initially putting a light inside of the top left altær, creating a sun at night. The smaller
ones were placed throughout the residency house, creating warmth an
reminding us of the Sacred, daily.

altær to the treehouse
2024 | 11" x24" x8" | stone
This is a commemorative Altær to a my childhood treehouse. A grouping of stones, symbolic of pain, change, and rebirth through color and texture. It caries water, an homage to religious water fonts. The water eventually evaporates and I am reminded to refill it, prompting me to give gratitude to the Treehouse for serving me as a multifaceted space: a storage room, a place of refuge, a playhouse, a studio, a guest room, a secret hide out, a perch a wasp's nest, a termite mound, a home.

The Sun house
2024 | 10' x 10' x 10'| fabric and wood
This tea house was created as an offering to the Sun. A sacred space made for the Sun and Earth to devour and alter. Fabric was specifically chosen to allow the Sun to erode the installation. It was nestled in an apple orchard to allow the participants to discover, observe and interact with the house as it changes through time.
